FOR OWNERS
FOR OWNERS
IN RICHLAND AND LEXINGTON COUNTIES.
Most business owners do not actually own a business. They own a job.
If that landed, the rest of this page is for you.
One uncomfortable question
If you disappeared for thirty days with no notice, what would specifically break? Not whether it would be hard — what would actually stop.
Write the list. That list is the size of your job and the inverse of the size of your asset. Most owners are surprised by how long it is, and more surprised by how many items on it are decisions only they are allowed to make.
Nothing on the list gets fixed by working harder. Every line is either a decision somebody else could be trusted to make, a process nobody has written down, or a relationship that belongs to you personally rather than to the business.
The disqualifiers
Five people should keep their money.
The owner who has already decided and is shopping for somebody to agree. The owner whose week is going to look exactly the same in ninety days regardless. The owner who wants tactics, when tactics are free everywhere and the product on offer is accountability.
The owner with no customers yet, who does not have a structure problem at all. They have a sales problem, and structure will not sell anything.
And the owner in genuine financial distress. That is an attorney and a CPA, in that order, before any conversation about operating rhythm. Coaching does not outrun a solvency problem and it is dishonest to pretend it might.
Landing on that list is not a rejection. It is a shorter route to whatever will actually help.
This is one piece of a bigger picture; Ben Lovro's main site has the rest.
What nobody can promise you
No outcome. Not a revenue figure, not a timeline, not a transformation. Anyone in Irmo or anywhere else who attaches a number to a coaching relationship is selling something they cannot deliver.
What is available is narrower: someone who has run the business you are trying to run, who will tell you the truth about what they see, and who will check whether you did what you said. That is most of what accountability actually is.
There is little undeveloped land left, so change here means aging shopping centers being torn down and rebuilt rather than new ground being opened up. Growth makes an owner-dependent business worse, not better, so a market that is expanding is exactly the wrong place to postpone this.
The local version of the problem
Two tiers sit side by side. National franchises hold the visible frontage on Harbison, while independent owner-operators work the older strip centers along St. Andrews and Broad River behind them.
National chains set both the rent and the customer's expectations. An independent here competes against polished operations on price, hours and convenience without their purchasing power or their marketing budget.
The Okra Strut is the genuine civic anchor. A town festival named after a vegetable says most of what needs saying about how Irmo sees itself, and it is not a small event. That cuts both ways for an owner. Reputation compounds faster in a market this size, and so does the expectation that you personally will be the one who answers.
Coaching or consulting
Consulting changes how the business works. It puts process, numbers, seats and systems in place. You buy it when the structure itself is broken — when work falls through a gap because no role owns it.
Coaching changes how the owner operates. Decisions, standards, what goes on the calendar, what gets tolerated. You buy it when you already know what the business needs and you are not doing it.
Getting that choice wrong is the usual waste in this category. A coach cannot repair an organisation where nobody knows who owns the next step. A new system cannot stop an owner who keeps pulling the work back.
Frequently asked
Questions people actually ask
What is the difference between coaching and consulting?
Consulting installs systems in the business. Coaching changes how the operator makes decisions and spends time. Buying the wrong one is the usual waste.
Do I need to be in Irmo?
No. The Midlands is home ground, but the work is not geographic. The interstate interchange carries commuters into Columbia, but Harbison is a destination in its own right, so a meaningful share of traffic here is inbound rather than outbound.
Is there a free way to start?
Yes — a free learning community and free written material. Use those first. If the free layer is not useful to you, a paid one will not rescue it.
Is this faith-based?
Ben's faith is part of his story and it shapes why he builds the way he does. Nobody is required to share it, and the material does not depend on it.
What actually happens in a coaching relationship?
A regular rhythm, honest assessment of what you are actually doing versus what you said you would do, and pressure applied to the one or two decisions that matter most this quarter. It is not a course and it is not therapy.
Make your next move
A year from now, what will you be glad you started today?
You don't need another promise that everything will be easy. You need something useful to learn — and a next step you're willing to take.
